Last week, we had quite a wonderful time at the Park Slope store launch party for our Live, Work, Create. Series, which honored author Joanna Smith Rakoff for her creative successes. The Live, Work, Create. Series is Brooklyn Industries’ initiative to acknowledge individuals who practice the brand’s philosophy – Live, Work, Create. These individuals express themselves creatively every day, having found a means to live and work without sacrificing their creative drives.
We are very excited to launch this new initiative with Joanna as our first creative honoree. She is an accomplished journalist and author, having written for The New York Times; Time Out New York; the Los Angeles Times; Newsday; Vogue; O, The Oprah Magazine; and various other publications. Joanna’s debut novel, A Fortunate Age, details the coming of age of a group of Oberlin graduates living in Brooklyn in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Her novel, inspired by her own experiences, thoughtfully tells the story of the group’s ambitions, friendships, successes, failures and struggles.
Our CEO Lexy Funk photographed Joanna in her creative workspaces; the photography was revealed at last Thursday’s party. After a warm welcome speech by Lexy to the party’s guests, Joanna performed a reading from her novel. We also revealed our Live, Work, Create. series collaboration t-shirt, “In New York,” which depicts text from A Fortunate Age: “But she was in New York. That was all that mattered.” Proceeds from Brooklyn Industries’ sales of this shirt support 826NYC, an organization that assists school age children with their writing skills.
Overall, it was a great event! Here are a couple of pics.
