Great Gift Idea: Infinity Scarves

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

Infinity scarves could very well be the perfect gift for women (like your mom, sister, best friend, or girlfriend) this holiday season. Without much effort they can brighten up an outfit and even be worn like a necklace, draped across the front over a t-shirt or sweater. There’s something extremely chic about the layers it creates and they’re incredibly warm and functional. Our Infinity Chunky Scarf is available in four great colors. There’s a basic black, ruby red, light brown and grey. Our model is wearing the grey in our holiday campaign and it couldn’t look cozier. It’s a fantastic gift that falls in the under $50 price category. You also won’t feel too guilty if you’re in the market for giving gifts to yourself!

Holiday '09

Wednesday, November 25, 2009

The holiday season is here! That means parties, gift-giving, merriment and shopping for all the festive occasions. We've made shopping easy this year with our online Holiday Gift Guide. You'll be able to find gifts for your family and friends (as well as gifts for yourself - why not treat yourself!) in price categories from Under $150 to Under $50.

There are cool pigeon shirts and eco sweaters for your dad and brother, handbags and graphic t-shirts for your mom and sister, and an array of wool and cashmere-blend sweaters for your significant other.

Our Holiday '09 Collection was photographed at Union Hall in Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood. We couldn't resist shooting at this bar and music venue (formerly a warehouse) because of its authentic, cozy vibe. Inside there's a fireplace, a library and two bocce courts.

On the set we made trees out of stacked books to complement our current store window displays, and had the best time with four high spirited models.

Be sure to browse the collection for yourself and of course with gift-giving in mind. This weekend our Black Friday Sale offers 20% off all outerwear designs, which means you can have the Fjord, the Nunaka or the Stormy Coat at the best price yet.

Fill up your shopping carts now and get ready to hit confirm at checkout with a gay ol' smile! Happy holidays, and happy shopping!

Upcycling Tips From Grand Central's Launch Party

Monday, November 23, 2009

The store launch and upcycling party for our Grand Central Terminal location last Thursday was a success. Our guests enjoyed wine, cheese and music from our DJ (and Store Design Assistant!) Devin.

We shared the definition of upcycling with our guests ("The re-use of an object in a new or more valuable way without degrading the material it is made from") and the story of how Brooklyn Industries came to be through the idea of upcycling trashed billboard vinyl to make durable messenger bags.

Not only did those in attendance see the store fixtures that had been upcycled for the location (i.e. a cashwrap made out of repurposed wood pallets) but they were able to take home a tip sheet with suggestions for upcycling, provided by BKI employees. Below are some of the tips we shared!

"My roommate and I found old shutters on the side of the road and we attached cork board to the back. Now the shutters frame what we've turned into a bulletin board." - Jessi, Graphic Design

"I used old cardboard boxes I found at Brooklyn Industries headquarters to make birdcages. The base and roof of the birdcage is made with the cardboard and the bars of the cage were made with Bamboo skewers I found at my mom's house. Both materials could have been trashed, but I was able to make something cute out of them." - Simone, Customer Service

"My boyfriend made a guitar stand out of an old vintage suitcase he found on the side of the street. He was featured in Make magazine for it." - Emily, Production

"Instead of recycling metal containers from canned food items I'll upcycle them, using them to hold things like writing instruments, plants and loose change. I'll decorate the cans with old newspaper articles or with the pages of 19th century literature I've found for a $1 at Strand Book Store." - Nicole, Public Relations

There are some woodworking companies in our building here at work. They often fill up dumpsters with nice leftover wood scraps. I've pulled out short planks of wood and brought them home to make shelves by adding some L-brackets." - Michelle, Operations

"Using upcycled small hooks and an old piece of wood, I put them all together, painted them and made a necklace holder for my wall." - Ellen, Retail Store Operations

"In my backyard, I converted an existing fire pit into a planter and used bricks I found to line all of the flower and garden beds." - Lauren, E-commerce

Live, Work, Create. Series Launches

Last week, we had quite a wonderful time at the Park Slope store launch party for our Live, Work, Create. Series, which honored author Joanna Smith Rakoff for her creative successes. The Live, Work, Create. Series is Brooklyn Industries’ initiative to acknowledge individuals who practice the brand’s philosophy – Live, Work, Create. These individuals express themselves creatively every day, having found a means to live and work without sacrificing their creative drives.

We are very excited to launch this new initiative with Joanna as our first creative honoree. She is an accomplished journalist and author, having written for The New York Times; Time Out New York; the Los Angeles Times; Newsday; Vogue; O, The Oprah Magazine; and various other publications. Joanna’s debut novel, A Fortunate Age, details the coming of age of a group of Oberlin graduates living in Brooklyn in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Her novel, inspired by her own experiences, thoughtfully tells the story of the group’s ambitions, friendships, successes, failures and struggles.

Our CEO Lexy Funk photographed Joanna in her creative workspaces; the photography was revealed at last Thursday’s party. After a warm welcome speech by Lexy to the party’s guests, Joanna performed a reading from her novel. We also revealed our Live, Work, Create. series collaboration t-shirt, “In New York,” which depicts text from A Fortunate Age: “But she was in New York. That was all that mattered.” Proceeds from Brooklyn Industries’ sales of this shirt support 826NYC, an organization that assists school age children with their writing skills.

Overall, it was a great event! Here are a couple of pics.
